Looking at signs of poor Mental Health

We’ve often been symptom free and our body seems to have no pain or bruises. But does that really mean we’re healthy? Does the absence of illness mean good health? The answer is NO.

How many times have you stressed over work, worried about your successes and failures, had difficulty in relationships, felt sad and low?  These are just some manifestations of mental or psychological issues. This may just be a phase or it may be a prolonged state. It may manifest differently for different people, but most of us often fail to take notice of these minor changes that later on develop into full fledged psychological problems.

Here’s how you can identify if you or any of your dear ones are suffering from mental health issues.

  • Overwhelmed by substantial feelings of guilt or sadness not related to particular situations.
  • Inability to concentrate or focus on tasks.
  • Excessive fears or worries, even of apparently non threatening events.
  • Frequent mood swings.
  • Crying spells.
  • Feeling socially disconnected and withdrawing from friends.
  • Loss of motivation to work or move ahead in life.
  • Disinterest in earlier liked activities. Significant reduction in activities done daily.
  • Significant tiredness, low energy or problems in sleep.
  • Having unreal or unusual experiences that are unexplained to you.
  • Inability to cope with daily problems or stress.
  • Trouble understanding and relating to situations and to people.
  • Problems with alcohol or drug use.
  • Major changes in eating habits.
  • Sex drive changes.
  • Poor decision making due to confusion in thought.
  • Preoccupation with irrational thoughts and actions.
  • Excessive anger, hostility or violence.
  • Suicidal thinking.

Each individual goes through either of the issues mentioned above. Although it can’t be physically noticed in the body, it is definitely present – observed through one’s actions and behaviour. Whether they recognize it and work on it; or fail to notice it and continue living as is, determines their well-being and overall health.
